Work on construction of a permanent circuit dates back to 1950, and was largely due to the efforts of local sports enthusiasts, led by Francesco Costa. The first official race was staged in 1953. Before long the track became a key international motorcycling venue. A few years later cars also began to race here, with the facility eventually going on to regularly host Formula 1 races.
Over the years it has hosted some of the world’s greatest international motor racing events: the World Motorcycle Championship, the Superbike World Championship, the 200 Miglia and Formula 1. However, this is a flexible, multi-role facility that also frequently hosts key cycling events, such as the Giro d’Italia and the Road Cycling World Championships. It’s also a key live music venue, hosting the Heineken Jammin’ Festival, concerts by AC/DC and Guns N ‘Roses and cultural events such as exhibitions, meetings and conferences.
From 2020 to 2025, it hosted the Emilia Romagna and Made in Italy F1 Grand Prix, and continues to be the stage for the WEC World Endurance Championship with the 6 Hours of Imola.
