The Monastero or, rather, Chaplaincy of San Francesco, has played a key part in the history and development of Mordano and the surrounding area.
Initially intended to honour Saint Anastasius, the monastery was built by Benedictine monks around the year 1000, during reclamation of the marshlands that once surrounded Mordano. In the 14th century it passed to the Franciscan friars who, after carrying out extensive renovations, changed its name. Their work can still be seen today, as highlighted by the use of different stones in different periods. In the mid-1600s, following a Papal Bull that banned small convents outside towns, the Franciscans abandoned the chaplaincy. It now belongs to the Diocese of Imola and consists of a church, a convent and a hospital.
Alongside the church, visitors can still see the cloister where Emperor Frederick Il Barbarossa once stayed.
