The current town hall was built in the 17th century as a Monastery of the Carmelite Fathers. Extended and renovated several times over the years, in 1804 it became the Municipal Town Hall following the suppression of religious orders enacted under Napoleon. The exterior neo-baroque portico was opened in 1925 (as stated on the frieze); this led to the 18th century portal - carved in sandstone and previously located on the facade facing the church - being transferred to the portico, on the main entrance. Alongside each column is a stone plaque bearing the name of a hamlet belonging to the Municipality of Medicina.
The wall underneath the portico and the cloister wall, instead, pay tribute to the war dead, some of Medicina’s most illustrious citizens and Garibaldi’s stayover in Medicina. On the east side, note that the outer wall of the cloister is actually a section of the ancient castle wall. High up on the southern side, the small Monte Carmelo ‘rustic’ temple, a place of retreat and meditation for the Carmelites, can still be seen.
