The Palazzo Alidosi has stood in the town centre for over 450 years.
The name of the architect who designed it is uncertain: Bramante and Francesco da Sangallo have been suggested, with historians now tending to favour the latter. The palazzo was initially commissioned by Cardinal Francesco Alidosi to emphasise the family’s influence. The work was later continued by Cesare and Rizzardo Alidosi. The initial project involved the construction of a palace-cum-fortress with four pronounced diamondshaped bastions enclosing a large courtyard with a loggia consisting of twenty-four sandstone columns. A large moat used to surround the building, with a three-arch bridge providing the only entry point to the east.
Now completely renovated, the building is the town hall. It also houses the War-Gothic Line Museum, the Chestnut Documentation Centre and the Animal Tower Learning-Environmental Centre.
